lolcats explained

well it's 3 am and i can't sleep. i guess it's time to write a blog post.

i've noticed a lot of people i've met recently just do not get my lolcat references. like when i say things like "ohai thur" or "i has ___." i understand if it's an older crowd, but when it's someone my age, it baffles me that they haven't even heard of lolcats. maybe i'm just so used to nerds since i went to a nerdy school. but even most of my non-nerd friends have at least seen a lolcat.

so i guess this post is directed at those remaining people who live under a rock. and also just to post all my favorite lolcat pictures.

now the first question to be answered is: what is an lolcat?
it's exactly what it sounds like. a laugh out loud cat. a cat that makes you LOL. it's a picture of a cat or multiple cats with funny captions, typically with misspelled words and incorrect grammar.

the next question is: why should i care?
because they're fucking cute and hilarious, that's why.

how the hell did this start?
as i had stated earlier, even non-nerds have heard of lolcats but most have not heard of their origin. lolcats are one of the most popular internet memes, and like most viral internet memes, started at 4chan. now the obvious next question is, what is 4chan? i provided a link but i don't recommend clicking it. if you don't know what 4chan is, you're probably better off not knowing. let's just say it's the AIDS of the internet. and when something happens on 4chan, it spreads just like HIV: pandemically.
basically the whole lolcat thing started with the tradition of "caturday," whereby anons on 4chan designated saturday as the day to post pictures of cats. and thus lolcats were born.
for more information, read the encyclopedia dramatica article.

where can i find these so-called "lolcats"?
although there are many sites that host lolcat galleries, the most popular one is icanhascheezburger.com. i personally don't like icanhascheezburger.com because it's user submitted so you have to wade through a bunch of really lame/unfunny lolcats to see the good ones. but at the same time it's a continuous source of new lolcats. still, when i'm trying to explain lolcats to a n00b, i have a hard time conveying it all by simply showing them icanhascheezburger.com
my personal favorite is roflcats. it's a very simple site and only has a few pages, but it pretty much showcases all the classic and funniest lolcats. it's also where i pulled most of these images.

okay enough with the explaining, show me the damn cats already!
i was just getting to that, asshole.

this here is the original lolcat, known as happycat:
why is this funny, you ask? because it's a happy looking fat cat (that looks slightly retarded) asking for a cheeseburger (of course it wants a cheeseburger, cause it's fat) and saying it in a retarded way.

now, lolcats in itself is a meme, but there are also "sub-memes" of lolcats. for example, the "invisible ___" meme, started by "invisible bike":
get it? it's cause it looks like it's riding a bicycle that isn't there! haha. silly cat. here are more examples:

another popular lolcat meme is the "im in ur ___, __ing ur ____"
this is better explained with the following pictures:

and of course one of my favorite variations of the meme:

ceiling cat is also a popular meme. the basic ceiling cat is a picture of a cat's head poking out from a hole in the ceiling:
add a funny caption and BAM! viral pic:

and then there's monorail cat:

those are some of the most common sub-memes of lolcats. there are countless more i'm sure, but this post is already getting long as it is.

here are some more of what i consider "classic" lolcats:

let's finish off this ridiculous post with some more of my favorite lolcats:

and there you have it. lolcats. hope you're ROFL by now.
